Today in History

06/24/1961 – Starkey Speedway, Roanoke, VA – Junior Johnson takes Rex Lovette’s Holly Farms Poultry 1960 Pontiac to victory lane, leaving his nearest competitor (Rex White) a lap down.  This race is indicative of the spotty record-keeping that existed on occasion back in the day: there are no attendance records, no margin of victory notes, and there are no lap leader records.

Starkey Speedway hosted 4 cup races (1958, 1961, 1962, and 1964), this was Pontiac’s only win at the track (Jack Smith was the pole sitter in a Pontiac for the 1962 race); the speedway was closed down in 1966.
