1986 Winston Promo – Pontiacs Out Front

11/10/2023 – A rare bit of promo showing Pontiacs in front of the Chevrolets (actually, they were all probably chasing – without success – the Ford of Bill Elliot); also, the cars used here are 1985 model Grand Prix’s even though for 1986 Pontiac was running/promoting the 2+2.

1990 Prego-V8 Grand Prix – Rick Mast Rare Pontiac Paint Scheme

10/14/2023 – When the topic of Rick Mast driving a Pontiac comes up, the first thoughts are of his stints in the Hooters or Conseco Grand Prix (1996 and 2000, respectively). But his first Pontiac starts were in 1990 behind the wheel of D.K. Ulrich’s Prego-V8 Grand Prix at Richmond, Rockingham, and Dover for the first half of the season. Interestingly, the image shows V8 on the hood and Prego on the quarter panels; not sure how it was determined which brand received top billing. Prego only appeared as a sponsor three times in Cup, each time with D.K. Ulrich; twice with Rick Mast behind the wheel and once with Jim Sauter. V8 is only showing a sponsor in Cup on one occasion (as V-8 Juice with Stan Barrett driving Junie Donlavey’s Ford Thunderbird at Phoenix in 1989 where, coincidentally, he wrecked Rusty Wallace in the Kodiak Grand Prix who was gunning for the Cup Championship). As a final Pontiac footnote for Mast, his final Cup top-10 and lap led was in the Conseco Grand Prix in 2000 where he finished out the season.

2006, Pontiac in Victory Lane?

08/22/2023 – Yes, in 2006 a 2003 Cup Pontiac made it to victory lane…in ARCA. Current Xfinity regular Jason Allgaier took his Hoosier/Trashman/Schlukebier Farms ex-Cup 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix to victory lane for the Allen Crowe Memorial 100 at the 1-mile dirt track at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield on August 20, 2006. Interestingly, just as Ricky Craven led only the last lap for Pontiac’s final Cup victory in 2003, Allgaier led only the last lap for Pontiac’s final ARCA victory.
