Rare Pontiacs in Cup – Driver’s First and Last Cup Starts in Pontiac

10/22/2021 – From 1982-1988, David Simko competed in 10 Cup races in cars fielded by his father Elmer (David is the father of former ARCA driver Michael Simko). David’s first Cup race was at the Winston 500 at Talladega (Alabama International Motor Speedway) on May 2, 1982, driving his father’s Mound Steel Pontiac; David unfortunately crashed out hard on Lap 4 finishing 40th (last) after starting 29th. Following 8 Cup starts over the next 6 years driving a variety of Chevrolets, Buicks, and Oldsmobiles owned by his father, David wound up his Cup career at the Miller High Life 400 at Michigan International Speedway on June 26, 1988, behind the wheel of his father’s Tom Company Pontiac; the Pontiac unfortunately suffered catastrophic engine failure on Lap 9 and David – again – finishing 40th (next to last) after starting 38th (Rusty Wallace took Pontiac to victory lane that day as he took the checkered flag in Raymond Beadle’s Kodak Pontiac).
