06/30/1957 – Jacksonville Speedway, Jacksonville, NC – Tiny Lund wheels the only Pontiac in the field, Sam Rice’s 1957 Chieftain, and finishes 3rd (9 laps down) to Buck Baker’s dominating performance in 1 of only 2 Cup events held at this .5 mile dirt track.

06/24/1961 – Starkey Speedway, Roanoke, VA – Junior Johnson takes Rex Lovette’s Holly Farms Poultry 1960 Pontiac to victory lane, leaving his nearest competitor (Rex White) a lap down.  This race is indicative of the spotty record-keeping that existed on occasion back in the day: there are no attendance records, no margin of victory notes, and there are no lap leader records.

Starkey Speedway hosted 4 cup races (1958, 1961, 1962, and 1964), this was Pontiac’s only win at the track (Jack Smith was the pole sitter in a Pontiac for the 1962 race); the speedway was closed down in 1966.

06/23/1962 – South Boston Speedway, South Boston, VA – Jack Smith starts from the pole in his 1962 Pontiac and leads the most laps (152 of 267), but finishes 2nd to eventual winner Rex White in Louis Clements’ Chevrolet.

This race also was the first career Cup start for Worth McMillion, one of the few drivers who campaigned Pontiacs in the mid-late 1960’s after Pontiac withdrew from Cup racing in 1963.

06/22/1962 – Southside Speedway, Richmond, VA – Jim Paschal leads only 9 laps, but it includes the all-important last one as he pilots Cliff Stewart’s 1962 Pontiac to steal the win from pole sitter Rex White in his Chevrolet who led 276 of 300 laps on the day and eventually finishes 2nd.  Jimmy Pardue, Johnny Allen, and Jim Reed finish 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively in Pontiacs to take 4 of the top-5 finishing positions for the Tin Indian.
